Man-made Global Warming: is it a Swindle?
by
Prof. Ray Bates Dept of Meteorology, NUI Dublin, Belfield
Prof. Bates will analyse the recent Channel 4 TV programme "The Great Global Warming Swindle", which claimed that the current global warming is due to variations in cosmic rays modulated by the sun's magnetic field rather than to man-made greenhouse gases. He will argue that the programme was largely propaganda, that cosmic rays variations cannot account for the current global warming and that we cannot so easily be absolved of our responsibility to limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Professor Bates is President of the Irish Meteorological Society. He is Adjunct Professor of Meteorology at UCD and formerly Professor of Meteorology at the University of Copenhagen. He was for eight years a senior scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre. Previously he was at Met Éireann, where he held the positions of Head of Research and Assistant Director.
