Colin O’Dowd was born in Galway and completed a B.Sc. in Physics at NUI, Galway. He received his PhD in Atmospheric Physics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology in 1992. He was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Helsinki in 2000 and Adjunct Professor in NUI, Galway, in 2001. In 2009 he was appoint Professor at the School of Physics, NUI, Galway, where he is Director of the Environmental Change Institute’s Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies.

 

 


He was joint Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geophysical Research [Atmospheres], the leading international geophysics journal, from 2000-2007 and has been Co-Chair of the International Committee on Nucleation & Atmospheric Aerosols, Member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, ex-officio Member of the International Commission on Clouds and Precipitation and Member of the RIA’s Climate Change Science Committee. His research into atmospheric aerosol and air pollution – climate interactions has led to more than 130 international journal publications (4 in

Nature and 1 in Science), with a h-index of 34 and more than 500 citations a year for his papers. He participates in and coordinates many international research projects and has a particular interest in marine aerosols.
