Field Trip to Dunsink Observatory

Dunsink Observatory, situated on a hill 8km northwest of Dublin's city centre, is the oldest scientific institution in Ireland. It was built in 1783-1785 for the first Andrews' Professor of Astronomy in Trinity College Dublin.
The Irish Met Society's evening visit to Dunsink will include the following:

a lecture entitled "Seeing Clear Skies from the Bog of Allen to the Atacama Desert" by Prof. Tom Ray, DIAS (link to Prof. Ray's biography and abstract)

a tour of the historical building
-
a chance to see the weather station and Grubb telescope

and if weather permits some observing time on the telescope.
Due to limited parking at Dunsink Observatory, the Met Society will organise a bus. There will be 2 pick up points: A city centre location (6pm) and Met Éireann, Glasnevin (6.30pm) with the bus returning around 10pm.
Registration fee (which includes the bus & refreshments): €10 for IMS members; €15 for non-members.
There is a strict limit of 50 places and it will be necessasy for participants to avail of the bus due to the parking restrictions.
