Irish Met Society Photography 2011
For the third consecutive year, IMS ran a very successful photography competition and received almost 800 entries. The standard was high which made the judging process a difficult task for photographer Brendan Noonan. The competition rules clearly stated that the photograph had to be in colour, contain no people and be taken in Ireland, but despite this a significant number of entries failed to comply with these criteria.
There were 3 prizes in 2009 and 2010 but this year we decided to award 8 prizes, with the winning photographs all having a strong meteorological theme.
Ciarán Healy, photography student in DIT, was the outright winner. His photograph “Hours Before it Disappeared” depicts a snowy scene at the Sally Gap in Wicklow. While you might think that the scene was captured just before a thaw set it, it was actually quite the opposite, as the road completely disappeared from sight shortly afterwards due to heavy snowfall. Robert Riddell’s photograph “Pine Island”, taken on Derryclare Lough, Connemara, achieved 2nd place. In fact, Robert was the overall winner in last year’s competition. A fabulous photograph of Black Valley House in Kerry (with an ominous sky), taken by Morgan O’Neill, was the 3rd place winner, while a photograph depicting wonderful clouds, mist and frost, taken by Barry O’Carroll in Carton Estate, Maynooth achieved 4th place. The 5th place entry, by Ronan Bree, entitled “Sun-tipped Sand” cleverly captured the sunrise lighting up a stretch of sand near Donabate, Dublin. “Ethereal Dawn” by Carsten Krieger came 6th, a photograph which illustrates sea fog, while a sole tree in a snow-covered field, by Aoife Hester, achieved 7th place. The final winning entry, 8th place, was “The Dark Hedges”, taken in Northern Ireland by Polish native Pawel Klarecki.
The Irish Met Society would like to thank all of the winners and entrants. Many of the images are shown in this newsletter and there is also a gallery of most of the photos on our website. The Society is also extremely grateful to Brendan Noonan for expertly judging yet another IMS photography competition.
